Very hit and miss; lacking managerial oversight
Huttie has been our plumber for some years and until recently has proven most reliable. So when we noticed that water was running through pipes even at night when everything was switched off, I contacted their office with the confidence that the matter would be speedily investigated and resolved. It was not. It took seventeen days and repeated pleas to the office for help in order to get the initial problem addressed; replacement of valves on the water tank. Unfortunately an unsupervised and inexperienced plumber did the work, the valves were not properly fitted and the trainee made no checks to ensure that this was the only problem. That evening we had to switch off the mains water because it was welling up through the kitchen floor. We also switched off the heating as we were not sure where the problem was. The next day I managed to speak to a young man in the office who was very helpful and made sure that the plumber who had changed the valves was booked in to investigate. He attended but was overwhelmed by the task. He spent hours trying to dig up a patch of floor of about 80cms square.. broke a screw driver in the process, was deeply discouraged, went off to try and find a more suitable digging tool. And then once he had located a hole, he really struggled with fixing it. At one point he was considering calling it a day and leaving us with no water over the weekend but fortunately I managed to convince him that this would not be the right thing to do. He eventually managed to attach the new section of pipe needed to fix the leak and left around 6pm, having been with us all day. If he had had mentoring or another plumber had attended with the correct tools and experience, this would have been resolved in a couple of hours. Eleven days later there was another leak from the water tank. The original confident and capable plumber attended and very swiftly diagnosed that the problem was with the original fitting of the valves and also swiftly tightened them. So we had a long delay followed by four visits and a total of around 12 hours on-site, where one call-out, plus one speedily arranged follow-up of probably at most say six hours would have done the job; the valves needed replacing, the pipe work investigating, a small section of floor dug up in a timely manner and the pipe fixing with confidence. Because the leak was neglected for so long the kitchen flooring is now in a poor state of repair. I attempted to raise all of these issues with James Huttie the CEO, simply to ask him to provide better supervision to some of the office staff, better mentoring for trainee plumbers and to review the invoice the office had sent which billed us for the hours which were due to lack of oversight of the young plumber. I had no satisfactory answer at all; the CEO singularly failed to provide any review of what had happened and provided no revision of the bill. I do not like owing money so after literally months of trying and failing to get a decent resolution of the matter we paid the full amount, which was extortionate. The whole experience was extremely stressful and also distressing because of our previously good experiences with the firm. The recent rapid expansion of the business and the lack of willingness on the part of the CEO to manage what is happening means that the service is currently dramatically hit and miss, lacking in managerial oversight . I have given two stars; one for the decent office staff member and another for the decent experienced plumber. In future we will be using a different firm. Sincerely, Karen Rodgers **************
Huttie were recommended by a trusted neighbour. We had a leaking shower pump and when I called them the terms/costs were professionally presented and a surprisingly short lead time appointment arranged. The plumber came on time and did an excellent job in the right amount of time. The invoice perfectly reflected the time and materials used. Plumbing done professionally.
Terrible company
Terrible company, ongoing made up invoices I had to have changed , tried to charge me for sending plumber back that didn't put boiler back together properly charges when told no charge Then fraudulently took payment out of my bank account no authorisation or speaking with me , not even a 1 star
Fantastic, quality service
Huttie were fantastic when doing our bathroom. Every person we interacted with was warm, friendly, reliable and knowledgeable. Any issues that came up during the work were quickly resolved with skill. They sourced all we needed and extra! We really noticed how they were prepared to go the extra mile to make the job as quality as possible. Would completely recommend them and would use them again.

I used Huttie to redo my bathroom. They were fantastic throughout. Tim who was managing the project did a great job of getting everything organized and kept everything running smoothly. The tradespeople did a fantastic job, even with my house with old crumbling walls and out of date plumbing. They made sure to do an incredibly professional job to the highest standard, and even though the job turned out to be a bit more complex than we thought, they saw it through till the end and delivered a brilliant result. I always felt completely confident in all the staff I worked with and knew I was in safe hands. Thanks so much to the team at Huttie!
Ten years ago when aĺl our trusted tradespeople had retired we were delighted to find Huttie who not only offered all-round services & guaranteed rapid call-outs but also employed only workpeople of the highest standards & ability. Since then we've always used them for safety, updating, repair & replacing services because their work is highly cost effective (especially for rapid 1st-time effectiveness & immediate free replacement the only time there was an error). Now we find in Huttie Building Services Ltd they've grown into providing a complete internal rebuilding service. Lucky for us as it gave us the all-in contract from tear-down to final make-good we were looking for. We were delighted at the way a large team of different trades were organised & managed into completing a difficult job in a short time frame. We are very pleased. And then our increased understanding & further learning began. We'd checked out decorators, cost based, to finish - but Huttie gave us quotes for that too. We turned that down as too dear - but after further discussion (& with speed in mind) we gave them the go-ahead. Good job we did! What a revelation! This was a standard of design work that had been beyond our imagining. The result is stunning & a delight to use: a lasting pleasure & beyond mere function. Piers Brereton
Ive used Huttie several times, both at my own home for various reasons such as boiler repairs and plumbing issues, however recently I had Huttie come out to my Business where they fixed a whole bunch of structural and farthing plumbing issues very quickly! Super friendly team as always!
We recently had Huttie change our bathroom taps for lever units and fix a leak. The job became slightly more complicated but the engineer quickly sorted the additional issues. As an anxiety sufferer, I was put at ease very swiftly and found the whole experience went very smoothly. We are now enjoying the new taps and leak-free cistern.
I have had the team at huttie, come out every year to service my boiler, every time the team are incredibly friendly and safe to say I have never had an issue with my boiler. I would recommend them not only for their friendly staff and impeccable work but for their speedy response times.

My experience of Huttie over the past 12 months has been excellent. What's not to like? The telephone system which seems to me clumsy. As for everything else very helpful people. They are charming and enjoyable to meet. They have responded very quickly to any problems. Top marks from me!
Loyal customer for a decade plus
Have been using Huttie for well over a decade. Not the cheapest but always flexible and reliable with excellent customer service and consistent quality
Huttie have been connecting us to the Swaffham Prior Community Heating network, which is a pioneering retro-fit of ground-sourced heating technology to a village full of listed properties, ours being 400 years old. Self-evidently, there isn't a lot of existing experience in the field and equally self-evidently, whatever is done needs to be done sensitively. We can't speak highly enough of Connor, Jeff and Dave. They were absolutely excellent - punctual, friendly and courteous, careful, thorough and obviously on top of the job. We are now successfully connected with a minimum of fuss, mess and inconvenience and very glad no longer to be dependent on oil.

I recently changed from an electric boiler to a gas boiler. The team were very professional and left the house clean and tidy after fitting. Dan in particular was excellent, very considerate and knowledgeable. Looking forward to my next installation to finish off utility room

Fast, Reliable
Always there for emergency pipe leaks. Used Huttie a few times and have received fast assistance and great fixes. They do charge high but you expect that from a professional plumber. I am just grateful for a fast, reliable fix. Chaps that have visited here have been so helpful, friendly and exceptional plumbers. Highly recommended Huttie. Disappointed and surprised to see bad reviews on here, but I guess most people only leave reviews when they've had bad experiences. More need to leave reviews when they've received great service. Give Huttie a go, they've been fab every time.
money focused-sloppy job
The company is just interested in swindling money without fulfilling the jobs. They charge the hefty call-out charge in addition to the service charge, so careful about it. The problem wasn't solved but visit after visit collected money. lost over 500 GBP, not a single issue has been resolved.
Unreliable and incompetent
I was awarded a green homes grant from the government and contacted this company to carry out the work, at first they were constantly ringing or emailing but then it went silent for weeks, I tried several times to contact them, sending them a email saying how displeased I was, eventually they got in touch and a man came round to survey the house and work out where and how solar thermal panels would be fitted. The only reason this review has 2 stars is because the man that came round was extremely pleasant and friendly and very knowledgeable about the work that needed to be carried out, after he went it became a waiting game again and eventually someone from Huttie emailed me and said it wasn’t worth me having solar panels, I mean like what the…I contacted the gov green homes grant and they were as surprised as me that they would say that, I sent a email back basically saying I had a 100% grant so I wanted the work doing, they eventually responded and set a date, they contacted me again and changed the date, this happened 3 times, the last date they gave me was for 18th oct which they cancelled a few days before and my gov voucher expired on 30th oct so they basically strung me along up to the point where my voucher would expire and I couldn’t even use anyone else, I’ve never felt so let down by a company and I recommend people avoid this unreliable incompetent company
3 days before installation cancels the job before multiple delays
Huttie group I choose to put solar thermal after multiple delays finally where going to install on 11 October cancelled the Job I lost time and money and they did not keep us on loop worst company to deal with I called the owner James no answer or apology
Very disappointed
Very disappointed! I was quoted for a job then hutties added a callout charge at the point of invoice. This callout charge was not disclosed at the beginning and “apparently” for a first inspection of the job that the engineer came out for but carried no equipment for and couldn’t do anything to fix at the time. We then waited 2 weeks on hutties coming back to fix the problem. They then left our toilet with a massive leak because the engineer didn’t put the correct seal on the base (again wrong equipment). The engineer then came back a third time and fixed it correctly. I cannot recommend hutties as the quality of the engineers you get is not consistent and you get charged for the fact that they don’t carry the right parts.
We employed Huttie Group to replace and reroute the gas installation pipes serving our flat. We were very pleased with their work, which was conducted quickly and responsively, taking into account our timing needs. The standard of workmanship was very good. I suspect Huttie Group are not the cheapest people in the business, but I'm very happy with the value. They did a great job, and I will happily use them again.
No firm for an elderly lady!
I recently arranged for them to visit my 91 year old mother to check on her boiler/thermostat controls and ensure they were correctly set. The call out fee included 30 mins labour which I reasonably thought adequate to complete this basic task. The guy spent 2.5 hour at the premises and charged my mother £200 cash for the experience. My subsequent enquiry was answered by the telephonist with ... “it’s a complicated system” - yeah right, economy 7 in a block of flats!! My formal lodging of a complaint with the company has gone without any response at all!! Ripping off elderly people ... AVOID
Seemed friendly and professional during quote visits. Chosen for reputation rather than price. However, the boiler was installed in July, and I have been chasing since September as the work was definitely incomplete (waiting expectantly in the meantime to hear from Huttie, as was fairly certain they knew it wasn't right/complete). Two electrician visits in November to install a thermostat that still doesn't work. Still having to chase for the flue to be placed in a position where it doesn't create a hazard - agreed before installation that it should and would be over head height. 1st December received an email that the Head of Operations will now look into my complaint, but yet to hear further. Doesn't appear they have their own quality control and I definitely wouldn't recommend. Extremely disappointed with the service so far.
I would highly recommend Huttie. They provided an amazing professional emergency service to us after a call out resulting from an electrical fire on Wednesday evening in our garage. From taking our initial call, by by an empathetic operator, to the electrical engineer turning up after the fire brigade to make electrical points safe, which enabled us to stay in our home. Early next morning a further engineer arrived to re-wire where possible. They will be returning to complete job. The cost was reasonable and we were extremely happy with their service. So much so that we will be asking them to carry out further work in our home, updating our circuit board and lighting system. I couldn’t recommend them more highly. A 5***** Service
We as a company in Cambridge couldn't recommend Huttie more. The whole company from the top to the bottom give 100% to you as a customer. We had a problem with our boiler and they repaired it and the attention to detail was above and beyond. a lovely company deal with in every which way. The engineers arrive when they say they will come. The people in the office make life easy when you ring them. Excellent 5 star service. Thank you Huttie!
Engineer came out of hours on his way home to inspect a leak from our shower. Having assessed and both agreed it needed replacement I was impressed to have them return as soon as the newer model was received. They installed and set up. The engineer also went through the operation of the unit and left the area clean and tidy.
Phoned with a problem boiler. They came the same day. Ordered the necessary parts, fitted them, but then found another part was needed. Ordered that and fitted it the next day - but still not working. In the end I went for a new boiler as I was confident they had done everything right and the boiler was simply packing up. Throughout all this, I never felt like I was left waiting unnecessarily. Quite the opposite - I felt they were really doing their best to help. Very good service. Professional throughout and had the problem resolved as quickly as possible. Boilers can be a pain, but when you are in the right hands at least it takes some of the stress away.
Fast professional service - recommended. I was initially put off by the requirement to pay up front before even booking an appointment plus a follow up email requesting direct debit access to my bank account for any future work, which I declined. But they turned up on time and did a great job so would not hesitate to use them again.
Very poor - They just want your money They charge you £82 pound before even coming out to look at a Job, this includes VAT and they never provide a receipt, even when requested. If they can't fix it, you have to pay for another visit at £50 per hour! - Their staff are rude and unhelpful, the only thing I can say is good, is that they are quick. The company contacted me and refunded my money, unfortunately I cannot remove this review, so I have put 3 stars instead of 1 - it seems that the owner does care about the customers, hopefully this will filter through down to the staff too
The service provided by Huttie has been terrific. We have had gas central heating installed and a house completely rewired. The staff are very polite and worked like Trojans to complete the work swiftly. They are friendly, trustworthy, patient, very knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure the house was upgraded to the highest standard. I would thoroughly recommend.
We were really impressed with the service we got from Huttie and their engineers. The engineers that we had in to replace our boiler and install our underfloor heating were polite, tidy and worked really hard to get the job done on time. We were pleased with the communication and were impressed that they consulted us along the way on any issues or changes that need to be done as the work progressed. I would definitely use them again and would recommend them to friends and family.
Huttie did some fairly major works on our bathroom, and we are delighted with them. The standard of the work is excellent, the workers were really lovely and friendly, and incredibly clean and tidy. And the office staff are great too, even answering emails on Sunday evenings. We are hugely grateful to them for an outstanding job!
