How do you choose an OZEV-approved EV Chargers installer?
Start by confirming the installer holds Part P electrical certification and is OZEV-approved if you want to claim the grant. Frequently Asked Questions About EV Charger Installers
A typical home EV charger costs £800–£1,200 fully installed, including the charger unit and labour. The most popular chargers for UK homes are 7kW units, which can fully charge a typical electric car in 6–8 hours overnight. Prices vary based on the charger brand (Hypervolt, Andersen, Ohme, and Easee are popular), the complexity of the electrical work, and whether your consumer unit needs upgrading. The OZEV grant provides up to £350 off for eligible renters and flat-dwellers.
While you can technically charge from a standard 3-pin plug using a granny cable, this is slow (15–20 hours for a full charge) and not recommended for regular use as it can overheat the socket. A dedicated 7kW home charger is far safer, faster, and more convenient. It must be installed by a qualified electrician with Part P certification. Most energy suppliers also offer cheaper overnight tariffs specifically for EV charging (e.g. Octopus Go, OVO Charge Anytime).
The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant provides up to £350 towards the cost of a home charger. It is currently available to renters, flat-dwellers, and people in rented accommodation — homeowners in detached, semi-detached, or terraced houses are no longer eligible. Your installer must be OZEV-approved to claim the grant on your behalf. The Workplace Charging Scheme provides up to £350 per socket (max 40 sockets) for businesses.
The most popular home EV charger brands in the UK are Hypervolt (Home 3 Pro), Andersen (A2), Ohme (Home Pro), Easee (One), Wallbox (Pulsar Plus), and Pod Point (Solo 3). When comparing quotes, look for smart charging features (app control, scheduled charging, solar integration), the cable length (5m or 7.5m tethered), and whether the charger supports load balancing if you have solar panels. All chargers sold in the UK must be smart and capable of being controlled remotely.
