Industrial sites have the load profile solar wants: machinery, compressors, refrigeration and HVAC running through daylight hours. Self-consumption of 70-90% is common, and at industrial rates of 25-30p/kWh every kWp installed saves roughly £190-£280 a year. That is a 3-5 year simple payback, and faster once tax relief is applied.

The tax treatment does a lot of work here: the Annual Investment Allowance deducts 100% of the installation from taxable profits in year one, worth 25% of the project cost at the main corporation tax rate, and there is no business rates uplift on the panels in England until at least 2035. Trapezoidal metal roofs are the cheapest to fit, clamps fix straight to the ribs. Flat roofs need ballasted frames, which add £50-£100 per kWp. Fragile roofs need walkways and access equipment that push labour costs up.

G99 approval and export limits

Every industrial system needs G99 approval from your DNO, and at 100kW+ that means a connection study, typically 8-12 weeks. In congested areas the DNO may cap export or ask for a contribution to network reinforcement. Make approval a contract milestone before committing to the full project.

Metering and supply contracts

Industrial sites are usually on half-hourly metering, and some suppliers reprice supply contracts when on-site generation is added. Check the supply contract implications as part of the business case, not after commissioning.
