Commercial Solar Panel Grants in the UK
Searching for a commercial solar grant usually ends in disappointment: unlike some domestic schemes, there is no UK-wide grant that pays for solar panels on business premises. What exists instead is a stack of tax reliefs, targeted grants and low-cost finance that, combined, routinely covers 25-45% of the real cost of a system. This guide lists every scheme worth knowing about in 2026, who qualifies, and what each is actually worth.
Quick Answer
There is no single national commercial solar grant in the UK. The biggest support is the £1m Annual Investment Allowance, which deducts 100% of the cost from year-one taxable profits, worth 25% of the project to a main-rate company. Farmers can get 25% grants (£15,000-£100,000) through Improving Farm Productivity rounds, Scottish SMEs get interest-free loans, public bodies use the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, and everyone earns Smart Export Guarantee income on exported power.

The tax stack is worth more than most grants
For a typical limited company, the reliefs stack like this on a £72,000 (ex-VAT) 100kW rooftop system: the Annual Investment Allowance deducts the full £72,000 from taxable profits in year one, which at the 25% main rate of corporation tax is worth £18,000. VAT-registered businesses reclaim the £14,400 VAT entirely. The effective cost is therefore around £54,000, before the system has generated a single kWh.
The full mechanics, including the special-rate rules and what happens once your AIA is used up, are covered in our guide to capital allowances and tax benefits on commercial solar.
Regional and sector schemes
Farms (England)
The Improving Farm Productivity grant pays 25% of eligible rooftop solar costs, from £15,000 to £100,000 per business, when an application round is open. Round 2 has closed and a new round has not yet been announced. See our farm solar guide for sizing and payback by farm type.
Scotland
Business Energy Scotland administers interest-free loans for SMEs covering solar PV and other energy-saving measures, with free advice included. Terms and cashback offers change between funding years, so check the current offer before applying.
Public sector
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, delivered by Salix Finance, funds decarbonisation projects for schools, NHS trusts, councils and other public bodies, and solar PV regularly features in funded projects alongside heat decarbonisation.
Local grants
Many local authorities and growth hubs run small energy-efficiency grant pots, often funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Amounts are typically £1,000-£25,000 with match funding required. GOV.UK maintains a green business funding finder.
"Free commercial solar panels" means a PPA
Adverts offering free solar for warehouses and factories are describing a Power Purchase Agreement: a funder pays for and owns the system on your roof, and you commit to buying the electricity it generates, typically at 20-40% below grid rates, for 15-25 years. Nothing is granted; the funder keeps the capital allowances, the export income and most of the saving.
PPAs make sense for organisations that cannot deploy capital or use the tax relief. For everyone else, owning the system nearly always returns more. Our tax benefits guide compares capital-free routes against outright purchase, and our commercial solar costs guide shows what you would be funding.
Commercial solar grants FAQ
Are there grants for commercial solar panels in the UK?
There is no universal national grant for commercial solar in the UK. The main support is tax-based: the Annual Investment Allowance lets businesses deduct 100% of a solar installation from taxable profits in year one, up to £1m of spend. On top of that there are targeted schemes: the Improving Farm Productivity grant pays 25% of rooftop solar costs for farmers when a round is open, Business Energy Scotland offers interest-free SME loans, and public bodies can apply to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
Can my business get free solar panels?
Not through a government grant. 'Free' commercial solar offers are almost always Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs): a funder installs and owns the system on your roof and you buy the electricity it generates at a discounted rate. That can genuinely work for cashflow-constrained businesses, but you give up the tax relief and most of the long-term savings that come with ownership.
Is there a solar panel grant for farms?
Yes. The Improving Farm Productivity grant (England) pays 25% of eligible rooftop solar costs, between £15,000 and £100,000 per business, when an application round is open. Round 2 has closed and a new round has not yet been announced, so check the GOV.UK farming investment fund page for the current status. Farm solar also qualifies for the Annual Investment Allowance.
Do businesses pay VAT on commercial solar panels?
Yes, 20%. The domestic 0% VAT rate does not apply to commercial installations. VAT-registered businesses reclaim the VAT in full through their normal return, so the effective cost is the ex-VAT price. Non-VAT-registered organisations, including many charities and community groups, pay the full 20%.
Is the Annual Investment Allowance a grant?
No, it is a tax relief, but it is the most valuable support most businesses will get. The AIA lets you deduct 100% of the installation cost from taxable profits in the year of installation, up to £1m. For a company paying the 25% main rate of corporation tax, that is worth 25% of the project cost, more than most grant schemes pay.
What funding is available for public sector solar?
Public bodies in England apply to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, administered by Salix Finance, which funds heat decarbonisation projects that can include solar PV. Schools, NHS trusts and local authorities have all installed solar through the scheme. Devolved administrations run equivalent programmes.
