What is MVHR?
MVHR is mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. When you seal a home up tightly to stop heat escaping, you also trap stale air, moisture, cooking smells and carbon dioxide. Opening windows clears that air but throws away the heat at the same time. MVHR solves both problems at once. It ventilates the whole house continuously and quietly, and it recovers the heat from the air it removes so you are not paying to reheat the house every time it ventilates.
It is different from an extractor fan or trickle vents, which simply push air out or let it leak in. MVHR is a balanced system: it supplies and extracts in equal measure through a central unit, and it filters the incoming air to remove pollen, dust and outdoor pollution. That is why it has become the default in airtight new builds, Passivhaus projects and deep retrofits where the building fabric is too sealed to rely on natural ventilation.
How does MVHR work?
An MVHR system runs two separate duct networks back to one central unit, usually sited in a loft, plant room or utility cupboard.

Do I need MVHR?

- New builds and Passivhaus – built airtight by design, so MVHR is effectively required.
- Deep retrofits – once you add external or internal wall insulation and seal up draughts, the home needs controlled ventilation.
- Homes with damp or condensation problems – MVHR removes moisture continuously and can cure persistent condensation and mould.
- Allergy or air-quality sensitive households – the filtered supply removes pollen and outdoor pollution.
